Cadadre Day Review

The original Corpse Party came out in Japan in 1996 for the PC-9801 and was redone and published 10 years later for Windows under the name of Corpse Party: Blood Covered. It was redone again under the name of Corpse Party: Blood Covered... Repeated Fear, and this is the version we obtained for the first time in North America, on PSP, in 2011. Posted for all the main consoles, with the exception of PS5.

There are three direct stories suites, Book of Shadows, Sweet Sachiko s Hysteric Birthday Bash and Blood Drive, all available on Steam, as well as an episodic suite that starts a new narrative arc, called Corpse Party 2: Dead patient. But this version 2021 is the classic and the most loved OG.

And this OG is a strange little game. I think the best way to describe it would be a mix of Super Nintendo style JRPG and survival horror of the PS1 era. It has beautiful visuals in 16-bit style pixels and a descending perspective that should please all those who still think of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Link To The Past as the summum of pleasant visual aesthetics. But Corpse Party does not have a level or combat. The gameplay is a mix of long sequences of dialogue and wandering in a haunted school, looking for objects and resolving simple puzzles. Corpse Party also has the visual narrative appearance of several purposes. Much of the pleasure of playing Corpse Party is to make different choices throughout and discover all the different purposes for each chapter.

To conduct this atypical gameplay approach, Corpse Party relies heavily on his story, and it s a very good. Without spoiling beyond the beginning of the first chapter, a group of 7 high school students are in their school to tell ghost stories at 19 hours for some reason, when one of their teachers and one of their little sisters arise. Because, Japan I suppose? One of the 7 students is about to leave the city, then the group of 9 participates in a ceremony where they tear a paper charm in 9 pieces, so that they are together forever. Before they can not leave, a huge earthquake occurs, and the students find themselves separated and in a dilapidated primary school that is certainly not high school.

A slow start for a memorable story

This story is actually much better told through its mixture of gameplay and cinematics only during its initial emptying of history. The story takes time to start. The long sequence of dialogue that starts the game, although well scripted, was not really a catch to attract me. This configuration simply did not intrigue me. Once the gameplay launched, I was carpet.

One of the areas of narration in which Corpse Party really excels is to create memorable moments. The closets are full of hair, pee buckets and rotten meat border the corridors, bloody warnings are hung on the walls and newspaper cuts describing the horrible spell of children. Most of the gameplay consists of clicking everything that is interesting in the environment, but the environment is so interesting that you will want to click on everything. Even the flavor text is a treat.

The main game consists of 5 chapters that each take about 2 hours, as well as 3 bonus chapters. Corpse Party is not the longest game, but it does not go beyond its welcome, and it is definitely worth its price of a bargiver. The only complaint I could have is that it will not be for everyone. Corpse Party is not quite a visual novel, but it s certainly more an interactive story than a video game. Its modern equivalents are games like to the moon and Yume Nikki. So, if you like JRPG, the old-fashioned survival horror or modern RPG Maker modern games with strong narration, I strongly recommend choosing Corpse Party. I was curious to play it and I m so happy to have done it.
